Tell your own brand story

What is Public Relations (PR) really? Recently I had a sales call with a PR firm. They're offering me brand exposure not only for my work here as a content creator for creators, businesses, and entrepreneurs, but also as a media, politics, and culture commentator. The offer was interesting - the pitch - but that's not why I'm here writing to you.

PR is a strange and all encompassing profession. It really is. It can incorporate marketing tactics, all the way to spinning stories. If you have a crisis, it can protect you. If you want more people to find out about you, it can ethically venture to increase your profile or use more 'creative' methods to get your name out there.

At the heart of the method is this: knowing what the message is, how to articulate it, and where to aim it.

This is the secret of PR. PR pros know how to package things but they first have to identify what it is they're selling. It's why so many past and present clients refer to me as their business therapist. I'm able to get into the psychology of the brand, and the value architecture of the business.

When you're a "one-man-band" (solopreneur) you have to figure this out for yourself - and it aint easy. And this is why I know TELLING YOUR OWN BRAND STORY is the bit missing from our mix as small business owners and entrepreneurs. We really need this ability and resource as part of our brand building repertoire.
